Call to Evangelical, Pentecostal and Revival Protestant Churches: Why Special Chairs for Pastors Should Be Banned

Call to Evangelical, Pentecostal and Revival Protestant Churches: Why Special Chairs for Pastors Should Be Banned

Call to Revival Churches: Why we must ban "Special Chairs" for Pastors
In many Protestant Evangelical Pentecostal and revival churches today, a practice has sadly become normalized: the installation of sumptuous armchairs, sometimes worthy of real royal thrones, reserved exclusively for the pastor and his wife, while the faithful sit on chairs ordinary.
Beyond aesthetics, this practice raises a deep spiritual problem. In light of Scripture, to physically elevate a man in this way is akin to a sin of pride and goes against the direct teaching of Jesus. Here's why:
1. It was the sin of the Pharisees that Jesus condemned (Matthew 23:6-12)
Jesus harshly criticized the religious leaders of his day who sought to distinguish themselves from the people: "They love the first place at the feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues... Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." To claim or accept a special "head seat" is to reproduce the self-righteous attitude that Christ rejected.
2. This is the sin of favoritism (James 2:1-4)
The apostle James is very clear about places of honor in the assembly. He warns that if we give pride of place to someone important and say, "You, sit here in this place of honor," and leave others in inferior seats, we are showing favoritism. James calls these "unjust judgments" and specifies in verse 9 that "if you are partial to persons, you commit sin".
3. The model of biblical leadership is service, not kingship (1 Peter 5:3)
The apostle Peter exhorts pastors (elders) to shepherd the flock "not as lording it over those who are your lot, but as models of the flock." An oversized throne or chair communicates a message of dominance and superiority. Now, our only King is Jesus Christ. The pastor is a servant. The Master himself humbled himself to wash the feet of his disciples (John 13).
A call to humility
Pastors, revival church leaders: the anointing is not measured by the size or comfort of your chair. By maintaining these "thrones" on your platforms, you steal a part of the glory that belongs only to God and you create a carnal separation between the "clergy" and the faithful believers.
Let's return to the simplicity of the Gospel. Let's banish these chairs from personal elevation. May Christ alone be lifted up among us!
