When freedom crosses the walls: a look back at the exceptional mission of Philippe DE courroux in Cameroon.
LIVE FREE! A look back at Philippe Decourroux's historic tour of Cameroon.
For ten days, from May 1 to 10, 2026, Swiss missionary artist and speaker Philippe Decourroux swept through Cameroon like a flame. Prisons, radio and TV studios, concert stages, conference halls—everywhere he went, he left behind a trail of human and spiritual transformation. A look back at an extraordinary tour.
Douala, First Contact
At 9:45 p.m. on May 1, Philippe Decourroux set foot on Cameroonian soil for the first time. At Douala International Airport, Claude Koum, accompanied by his wife and communications specialist Christian Mpondo, gave him a warm welcome. The artist was immediately captivated by the gentleness of the people’s faces as much as by the humidity of the tropical air.
The following days unfolded at a brisk pace. On May 2, he was hosted by Pastor Emmanuel Koum and the CBC Israel congregation in Makepe for a fellowship meal, before joining the musicians and choir members in the rehearsal room. That evening, Radio Balafon welcomed him onto the “Gospel Mania” program, alongside communications specialist Christian Mpondo.
On Sunday, May 3, after attending a worship service at a local church, Philippe Decourroux headed to the Canal 2 studio for the show “Jambo,” hosted by President Tchop Tchop. The following days took him first to Radio Bonne Nouvelle Douala for the “Arise and Shine” program, then to Radio Balafon for the morning show “Sacré Matin”—all of these stations coming together to announce the upcoming highlights.
Behind Bars: A Message of Freedom
Wednesday, May 6, marked a turning point in the tour. The team set out for Édéa to enter the Central Prison, carrying with them much more than just words. Rice, sugar, tapioca, soap, salt, sewing and soccer equipment, gospel brochures, copies of the book *Libéré*, and USB drives loaded with music albums—more than 400 inmates received these donations. Eight of them took a decisive step in their spiritual journey during a prayer of repentance. Back in Douala, Philippe Decourroux appeared on the show *Faut Pas Zapper* on Balafon TV.
The following evening, a human chain of a different kind was formed. At the CBC Makepe offices, dozens of volunteers spent nearly six hours spreading chocolate butter on no fewer than 5,000 loaves of bread, intended for the inmates at the Douala-Newbell Central Prison.
On Friday, May 8, at 8 a.m., the team entered the prison gates with their shipment. Greeted by beaming faces, Philippe Decourroux sang, shared his testimony, and led a prayer of salvation. More than 4,800 inmates benefited from this ministry—a telling figure that reflects the scale of a mobilization as discreet as it is exceptional.
The Woman at the Heart of the Message
On the evening of May 8, at the Chapiteau d’Akwa, a lecture titled “Sexual Slavery and Violence Against Women” drew a large and attentive audience. In an atmosphere that was both solemn and liberating, Philippe Decourroux addressed head-on realities that are often kept silent. Books were distributed at the end of the evening. Several participants said they left feeling profoundly transformed.
The Grand Finale: “Vivre Libre!” in Concert
On May 9, the Salle des Fêtes in Akwa was sold out. Audience members from Douala—and as far away as Yaoundé—flocked to attend this five-hour concert event. In the opening act, singer Claude Koum set the stage. Then Philippe Decourroux takes the stage amid an atmosphere of collective joy. About 1,000 copies of the book *Libéré* and around a hundred USB box sets were distributed to the Cameroonian audience—for a symbolic one franc in some cases. The book signings continued well into the night.
The results of a tour
In ten days, Philippe Decourroux and his team reached more than 5,200 inmates in two correctional facilities, distributed more than 1,000 books, gave away 5,000 loaves of bread, and filled a concert hall. These numbers say little about what really matters: lives turned upside down, perspectives transformed, dignity restored.
“To God alone be the glory for this ministry in Cameroon.”
